Remember Loch Mo Naire in Skelpick - cold loch filled with ancient coins and people's hopes and desires thrown into the loch with them. Who were all these people who made the journey? The need to believe in something more........... have we changed??

You have reminded me of research I did for this piece.

The names are from Bettyhill, Eurodisney and the Palace of Versailles gardens. They were hung up on threads in my bedroom in Dundee, when I was a student there.

I discovered that Loch Mo Naire was a place of pilgrimage for many years, and a stream of people would go there to bathe in the water, believing it had the power to cure them, or as you have written, throw coins in the water as a token or a wish. I was thinking of the connection to the land, the power of names, and what happens when connections are broken, new names are given, and with the Highland Clearances, the building of the Palace of Versailes and its gardens, or the creation of Eurodisney, the land is completely recreated and reshaped.

I'm not sure if believing in the magic of Mickey Mouse is comparable to believing spirits in a loch can cure diseases. I know people that find concrete beautiful and comforting. I prefer Torrisdale Bay (at the risk of lapsing into - "there's a place beside the sea!").

Perhaps you and I should go for a swim in Loch Mo Naire next midsummer night, eh missus?
